Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VII is King of Yogyakarta’s Palace for 43 years and have 3 consecutively queens and 4 crown princes in a row as well.
He was born as Raden Mas Murtejo (the grandson of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IV), on Monday, 4 February 1839 (20 Dulkangidah Je 1766). He is the oldest son from 23 children of Gusti Raden Mas Mustojo / Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Mangkubumi (younger brother of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono V).
Sri Sultan Hemengku Buwono V (35 years) who died on 5 June 1855, he had left 7 daughters and 2 sons, but one son died at he was young and one son born after Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono V passed away. The younger brother of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono V, GRM Mustojo who then had titled Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Mangkubumi (34 years) ascended the throne as Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VI on 5 July 1855.
Since the empress of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VI, Gusti Kanjeng Ratu/GKR Kencono (daughter of Paku Buwono VIII from Surakarta’s Palace) has only 2 daughters, then The King had decide to appoint the new empress, her name is GKR Sultan/GKR Hageng. Once after GKR Kencono has released her position as consort queen, and thus a new title and name, GKR Hamengku Buwono has been given to her.
BRM. Murtejo as the eldest son of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VI and empress GKR Hageng, was named as crown prince of Yogyakarta’s palace on march 25, 1872 with his new title; Sampeyan Dalem Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Anom/SDKGPAA. Hamengku Negoro Sudibyo Rojo Putro Narendro Mataram.
On July 20, 1877 Sir Sultan Hamengku Buwono VI passed away (56 years), later, on 13 August 1877, SDKGPAA Hamengku Negoro (38 years) ascended the throne as Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VII.
GKR Kencono (daughter of Prince Ali Basah Abdulmustapa Sentot Prawirodirjo) only has two daughters (GKR. Condrokirono I and GKR Sekar Kedhaton / GKR. Maduretno), then GKR Kencono dismissed her position as the empress and given a new name as GKR. Wandan.
Then Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VI lifted one of his concubines (Garwo Ampeyan) Bendoro Raden Ayu Retno Purnomo as the new second empress (she was a daughter of Raden Ayu Djojodipuro I, one of the grandchildren of BPH Riyokusumo; the son of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono II) with the new title and name of GKR Hemas. At that time GKR Hemas already possessed three children (BRM Akhadijat, BRAJ. Martijah and BRM Prastisto).
After becoming empress, was born to a fourth son named GRM Putro (Putro name is given as a memorial to the first son after GKR Hemas elected to be a consort of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VII).
Hereinafter GRM. Akhadijat was appointed as Crown Prince with the new title of Prince Sampeyan Dalem Kanjeng Gusti Anom Duke Hemengku Negoro Sudibyo Rojo Putro Narendro Mataram (I), but he died at a young age and had no descendants. Then her younger brother namely GRM Pratisto replaced him as a crown prince, SDKGPAA. Hamengku Negoro (II). GRM Putro which by then had new titled GPH Puruboyo was appointed as new crown prince, SDK GPAA Hamengku Negoro (III), and the name of Puruboyo submitted by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VII to his brother GRM Sujadi.
Appointment GRM Putro as crown prince by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VII was held on July 4, 1895, and after the death of the empress GKR Hemas on July 14, 1895, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VII lifted his concubines (Garwo Ampeyan), Bray. Retno Sriwulan (Princess of BPH. Hadinegoro, one of 80 children of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono II) as consort to the third empress and then was given the new title and name as GKR Kencono in 1895.
